When you just need the big stuff gone
Not everyone needs a full clearance. Very often it is just one or two heavy pieces that have to leave: the old settee after a new one arrives, a bed frame from a child who has moved out, or a dark wood wardrobe that nobody can lift. Our furniture removal service is for exactly these jobs, from one item to a vanload.
It suits homeowners, tenants, landlords between lets, and anyone helping an elderly relative make space. We collect from houses, bungalows and flats across Middlesbrough, as well as places such as Thornaby, Ingleby Barwick and Nunthorpe.
Pieces we commonly take
- two- and three-seater sofas, corner suites and armchairs
- single, double and king-size beds, divans and mattresses
- wardrobes, dressers, bedside cabinets and tallboys
- dining tables and chairs, coffee tables and nests of tables
- office desks, bookcases and display cabinets
- garden furniture, benches and patio sets
We can also take fridges, freezers and other white goods at the same time. Some people book a collection just before a decorator or carpet fitter is due, so the room is already empty and ready when they arrive. If you are unsure about a particular piece, send a photo and ask.
How a collection works
Send us a quick message or call with a list of what is going, a few photos, and details of access, such as stairs, a lift, or a tight turn at the top of the landing. You will get a clear price back, free and with no pressure to accept, and quicker jobs can often be slotted in when you are in a hurry.
On the day, two of us arrive to do the lifting. We protect walls and door frames as we go, and where a wardrobe or bed will not fit through a doorway, we take it apart rather than force it. Many older Middlesbrough terraces have narrow staircases and steep turns, and modern flats can have tight corridors, so this is something we plan for. You do not need to bring anything downstairs first; leaving it where it is is safer for you.
Giving furniture a second life
A lot of furniture we collect still has plenty of years left in it. Where items are clean, sound and safe, we aim to pass them on for reuse, for example to charities or reuse projects. Charities often have to turn down upholstered pieces that do not carry a fire safety label, and anything stained, broken or damp is unlikely to be accepted, so we are honest about what can realistically be rehomed. Wood, metal and other materials from damaged pieces are separated for recycling where possible, and only the remainder is disposed of. Find out more on our reuse and recycling page.
Other options worth knowing about
If you only have one or two items and you are not in a rush, Middlesbrough Council runs a bulky waste collection service for residents, and some charities such as the British Heart Foundation collect good-quality donated furniture. These can be great choices. Where we tend to help is when you need things carried out from upstairs, taken apart, collected at a time to suit you, or removed along with other items in one visit.
Before we arrive
- empty drawers, cupboards and bedside tables, checking for anything slipped down the back
- look down the sides of sofa cushions for remote controls, coins and jewellery
- remove any bedding you want to keep
- clear a path through the hallway if you can
- let neighbours know if a van will be parked outside for a little while
Bigger jobs and related services
If removing furniture is part of emptying a whole property, our full house clearance service may be more suitable. Bags of general waste and clutter can be added through our household rubbish collection, and offices or shops can ask about business furniture clearance.
