A village on the edge of Middlesbrough
Nunthorpe feels different from most of Middlesbrough. It sits at the south-eastern edge of the borough, with fields and the Cleveland Hills beyond, and Roseberry Topping in view from the recreation ground. The name goes back to Cistercian nuns who settled here in the 12th century, and it stayed a small farming place until the railway arrived in the 1850s.
After that, Middlesbrough's ironmasters began building homes here. Grey Towers, built in the 1860s for William Hopkins, still stands and has been converted into apartments. In the early 1900s Sir Arthur Dorman laid out tree-lined roads of spacious houses near the station. Bigger estates followed from the late 1950s to the 1970s, and newer developments have been added since. One unusual detail: the Esk Valley railway line forms a boundary, so part of the village is in Middlesbrough and part is in Redcar and Cleveland.
What clearing a Nunthorpe home is like
Nunthorpe houses are generally on the larger side. Detached homes with four or five bedrooms, a double garage, a loft and a long garden are common, and that adds up to a lot of contents. A full Nunthorpe house clearance can take longer than a similar job elsewhere simply because there is more space to fill.
We plan these jobs carefully. First we walk round with you or your representative, agree what is staying, then clear in an order that keeps the main routes through the house free. Good furniture and household items are put aside for reuse where possible, and we keep paperwork and personal items separate for you to check.
When a long-time resident has died
Many people chose Nunthorpe to raise a family and then stayed for the rest of their lives. When a parent dies, their children may live elsewhere and be juggling work, travel and grief. Our bereavement clearance in Nunthorpe lets you take as much or as little part as you want. We can box up keepsakes and post or hold them, or work through each room with you.
Estates in this area can include valuable furniture, paintings, jewellery or collections. Our executor and probate clearance sets those items aside and records what leaves the house. Waiting for the grant does not normally stop an executor emptying the house, yet heirlooms and valuables deserve a pause while the estate is worked out. For advice on your own case, ask a solicitor; the GOV.UK probate pages set out the process.
Lofts, double garages and outbuildings
Big houses tend to have big lofts. An attic clearance in Nunthorpe may involve boarded roof space full of boxes, old furniture and luggage. Garages and garden outbuildings are just as likely to be full, with tools, mowers and garden furniture. Our double garage and shed clearance deals with all of that, and old chemicals or gas bottles are flagged up for separate disposal.
Downsizing from a family home
A lot of our Nunthorpe work is with couples or widowed parents moving from a large house into a bungalow, an apartment or a care home. The new place cannot hold everything, and choosing can be tiring. Where only a few bulky pieces need to go, such as a dining table, a spare bed or a wardrobe, our unwanted furniture collection is a lighter option. If the move leaves lots of mixed odds and ends, broken items and bags, a junk and rubbish clearance can tidy up what is left.
Access and parking in Nunthorpe
Access is usually straightforward. Most homes have driveways, and many roads are quiet. Guisborough Road is the busiest route, with a small parade of shops, so for houses along it we try to load from the drive. Some older roads near the station are narrower and lined with trees, so we take care with low branches and verges. Converted buildings such as Grey Towers can have shared entrances and stairs, which we plan for in advance.
Rentals, businesses and difficult situations
Landlords and agents with property in Nunthorpe can book an end of let clearance when tenants leave belongings behind. We also help local offices and businesses with a commercial premises clear-out.
Not every home is tidy, and that is nothing to be ashamed of. If someone's home has become overwhelmed with belongings, our hoarding clearance support works gently and privately, at a pace that suits them. Hoarding UK is a charity that can also help.
Which council, and what about bulky waste?
Because the village is split, the council depends on which side of the railway your home is on. Both Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland councils offer residents ways to get rid of large items, which can suit one or two things. For a fuller clearance, we sort everything for reuse, recycling and disposal. You can read about our approach on the responsible recycling page.
